Being a lap cat is good. It means lots of cuddles and scritches.
I'm wondering if you're actually a Kindle cat Millie, as you've only been doing a lot of the lap-sitting stuff since the arrival of the Kindle in your mom's lap. Perhaps you find it easier to read than the old-fashioned printed books your mom used to read? Whatever ... it's a great outcome for both cat and mom.
Now, for New Year's Day, about turning around and giving your mom a big kiss on the cheek? That would be fabulous.
