A Playmate?

Mr Karate was here last night having dinner with Mom; they were watching me run around and try to play with Gizzy. Of course that never works because Gizzy is such an old fogey.

"Millie needs someone to play with."

"Yeah, but that means I'd have to get another cat."

So, what do you all think? Do you think we should get me another kitten so I could have a playmate?

Millie! I am having the same dilemma as you. I like to play, but Pixie is too sick to run around with me. I would love a new playmate. But I don't know if we would leave Pixie alone, or we would cause her twice the trouble!

I think you are a very good cat, so you could keep a little brother or sister in line. So, I vote YES for the new playmate!

Hi, Millie. I've been following you since your first days w/Malcolm! I usually lurk here, though. Last year, we began fostering an approx. 5-6 week old kitten found alone at a local business. "Edison" socialized very quickly and was to have gone to the shelter from which we adopted our other cats. Edison is now about 7 months old, still w/us and isn't going anywhere.

Although we love our little Edison, I'm unsure that keeping him was the right thing to do, for a few reasons. The reason that might be applicable in your situation is that I think Edison's kittenish exuberance and simply his presence is stressing out some of the older cats. And, bco health reasons, stress is the last thing some of them need right now.

Of course, there are good points to having Edison, too! E.g., he forces the two adult boys to play with him. (He doesn't try that anymore w/the two adult girls; they let him know they're not interested.)

I don't mean to be a spoil sport, Millie. I do mean to share how there have been some negatives, although small, to adding a kitten to our feline family. I wish you and your family all the best, whatever you decide to do.

I'd say yes, but do take into account it might take some adjusting too :) I wouldn't put it off too long though if it's in the plans, the older the "established" cats are, the harder transitioning is, I've got 6 cats total, and it's been pretty easy for the most part, my two females aren't enamored of the other four, (except the one who's littermate of the oldest boy lol), but overall they have fun together and we're a happy fur-ever family!

Skeeter and I play/sleep/eat with each other a lot. In fact, The Big Thing admits that that is why he went and found me.

I'm happy for that, of course, but so is Skeeter. He would hardly know what do to all day if I wasn't there with him.

We say to get another kitty and another litterbox. An make sure there are food bowls for each kitty.

You need a play mate and friend.

Millie,

I also vote yes; provided there is enough time, love, and space for another kitty. How do Gizzy and Jasmine feel about having another young sibling in the house? The new addition doesn't necessarily have to be a kitten; but, maybe an young cat about an year in age.

Yes, I also forgot to mention that I love your blankie. I'm a beginner knitter and a striped blanket like yours would be just the thing for my next project.

I won't vote yes or no. This will be a big change to the household, just like when you joined. No way to predict how well it will turn out.

I agree with Annie, it might be a stresser for Jasmine. If shhe's marking now due to Millie she have problems with another. Maybe talke to her vet to get some input from someone who knows her medical needs.

That said only you know what would be best for your clan.

I go back and forth over a friend for Beezer, but he's 7 now and he is so spoiled as an only kitty I'm not sure he'd take to the newbie. *sigh* But a little one like Millie would be great. Maybe make him run around a little more and work off some of the belly.

PS from Mom Robyn - I believe when it's time to add another cat to the family, you'll know deep inside. Listen to that voice inside, whatever it whispers. It knows better than any of us out here can.

We have been taking care of a new cat here in Progreso as well, a town that is chock full of strays. The cat we are calling "Dr. Jean Grey" comes and goes as she pleases, and is quickly warming up to us and getting socialized. So, as Millie came to us, I would say that the cat you need comes to you.
