Breast Cancer Awareness Month - 5 Things

Everybody! Listen up, this is important! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All us cats have Bean Moms who look after us. We have to look after them, too. Here are Five Things to tell your friends (and Moms) about breast cancer.*

1. All women can get breast cancer, even those who have no family history of the disease.

2. The two most important factors for breast cancer and being a woman and growing older.

3. Women diagnosed with early breast cancer, when the cancer is small and has not spread, have a high chance of surviving it. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early. Women should get one every year starting at age 40. If a woman notices any breast changes, she should tell her doctor without delay.

4. Women can help reduce their chances of developing breast cancer by engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol intake.

5. Through early detection and improved treatments, more woman than ever are surviving breast cancer.

Mom had her annual mammogram yesterday, and came back with this packet of goodies, including a nice beaded bookmark.

For some reason, women are not having their regular mammograms, and this is not good. Make sure your Mom gets hers!

Dear Millie - My Mommy went last month, we make her go every 6months 'cause she has had some troubles with that stupid disease a few years ago. She's lucky - she gets to have ulatrasounds and MRI's too! Mommy - here, "lucky" is not the word that comes to mind Parker dear!

The LL is still pretty young for a mamogram but she does her checky exam thingies and goes to her woman doctor every year. Lots of it in her family (her aunt just had a masectomy in both breasts) so she is very careful.

Our Mommy has a few more years before she has to start getting them but she thinks breast cancer awareness is vital! Her grandmother and aunt both died from breast cancer and our Nana (Mommy's Mommy) has already had to have calcium deposits removed. Everyone should make sure to do a monthly check! Itr could save your life!

Our mom is jealous. She says all she got was squeezed and sent on her way. No goodie bag!

Good work ladies. Lucky us pussy cats don't need mammograms but you should check us out if we get lumps too!!

Thank you Millie for letting us know that. Our mom says that she gets a mommy-o-gram every year.

(Mom: It's a mammogram not a mommy-o-gram guys).

Whatever!

We just wanted to add that women under 40 have to do monthly self exams and have their yearly physicals. Last year my mommie's doctor found a lump in her breast that wasn't there previously, and mommie's not even thirty! Mommie was furry lucky - MRIs and mammograms confirmed it was fibrous tissue. But, the doctor says lots of women think the fibrous lumps are no big deal. However, depending on the type of tissue, they can become cancer later on, and the women don't even know it's a big deal until it's too late. Mommie had to make some lifestyle changes so that the lumps would get smaller and maybe even go away. She keeps a close eye on how her bras fit and any pain or tenderness unrelated to her monthly cycle. All women with dense breast tissue or fibrous/calcified lumps should. And, if you have a family history of any cancers related to female hormones be extra careful! More than one contributing factor means more caution should be taken!
We’re very glad she’s okay, ‘cause we like having her around for chin skritches and treats and stuff. And now that her boobies are better, Miles can go boob-walking again on Saturday mornings!

Well, Mercy actually has breast cancer right now, or at least that's what the vet said it probably was. It's not pretty. She's 17 years old and probably hasn't long until the Rainbow Bridge. We just recently lost Spike to the Rainbow Bridge because of Diabetes. :-( Mommy has a history of breast cancer AND diabetes on both sides of her family, so the people-doctor says she HAS to start getting mammograms THIS year!
